It’s a lively scene that’s perfect for today’s casual diners.
Come for lunch or dinner – dine-in or carry-out. Whether it’s a simple and affordable weekday pizza with the family – or a special occasion. Our menu features more than 30 specialty pizzas and sandwiches and more than 30 delightful soups, appetizers, crisp salads and entrees prepared fresh everyday in the kitchen of our talented Italian chef.
Zingarella’s Love of Family
A childhood nickname bestowed by a grandmother was the simple inspiration for the name, Zingarella, or little gypsy. It represents both love of family and tradition – with a modern twist – which the restaurant serves up each day, says owner, Mark Zommer, and his life and business partner, Amanda Theriault. Proud parents of three children under 12, they want kids to feel special at Zingarella. Our Kids Menu offers an abundance of simple foods with side salads or fruit, desserts and beverages all included in one super affordable price. (Check out our Kids Art Wall of Fame where we show off mealtime art projects!)
History of a Gypsy Jewel
The storied, 150-year-old building at 83 West Main Street is a big part of Zingarella’s charm. Over four years we lovingly transformed this building to capture a relaxed bohemian atmosphere with an Old World spirit, for relaxing, good times.
A million-dollar renovation produced a lovely dining room that seats 70 where we can accommodate parties up to 16. It opens to a full service bar with seats for 30 more – and features a 30-foot wall of glass doors and five hi-def TV’s. An expansive sidewalk patio welcomes 50 more diners. Reservations are recommended on weekends.
In its rich history Zingarella was a meetinghouse for the area’s colonial settlers, a reading room for the Plantsville Library Association, and a Seed & Grain store owned by the Cowles Family. Around this era, the second-floor flophouse was colorfully rumored to be a bordello. Some time in the late 1800’s a fire broke out in the building – charred burn marks are still visible in the attic beams. A railroad company later took ownership and housed workers on the property. A laundry was the last occupant prior to Kry’s Pizza, in the 1970’s.
Expand on the Fun!
While visiting Zingarella, guests can do more than dine. Consider jumping on the “tracks” – the hiking and biking “rail trail” known as the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. Official car and bike parking spaces are right outside our door. When completed the trail will stretch 80 miles from the Yale Campus in New Haven to the Northhampton, Mass. Visit TrailLink.com for more info.
In spring 2013, we will celebrate the opening of our Ice Cream Café with a walk-up window offering 30 flavors of ice cream for cones, sundaes, milk shakes and health drinks. Above the ice cream addition will be a Rooftop Lounge – a wonderful addition to private parties in our second floor banquet room.
About Our Head Chef
Angelo DiDomenico spent his childhood outside Rome, in the Formio region of Italy, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1966. Fans like CBS Radio’s Ray Dunaway have followed his career – to keep track of his house-made Paglia e Fieno fettucine, pillow-soft, potato gnocci, and award-winning, tender veal meatballs! He was head chef for many years at notable Connecticut establishments such as The Pavilion in Cheshire, The Corner House in Farmington, and Ristorante Italia in Avon. Angelo infuses his dishes with fresh seasonings and ingredients. He offers a lighter and brighter interpretation on traditional Italian specialties, making Zingarella’s menu perfection for modern culinary tastes.
